Self-Pay

Some clients decide to pay for their counseling out of their pocket. This is often referred to as "private pay” or “self pay.”  Private pay clients choose not to involve insurance companies in their mental health care. This means their counseling isn’t limited by a diagnosis, treatment plan, or session caps dictated by insurance. Private pay allows you to work with the therapist who feels like the right fit—on your terms, without outside interference. In a system that often centers diagnosis and pathology, paying out-of-pocket can also be a liberatory and de-pathologizing choice. You’re not required to receive a mental health diagnosis in order to receive care. As shared in Decolonizing Therapy by Dr. Jennifer Mullan, true healing often begins when we stop asking “What’s wrong with me?” and start asking “What happened to me—and what do I need now?” You have the control, not the insurance company!

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), any fees paid to a licensed provider can be submitted to your HSA for reimbursement.

Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including counseling services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including therapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Payment

Cash, check, and all major credit cards accepted as forms of payment at the beginning of the counseling session.

Cancellations

If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. Otherwise, you will be charged $100 for the session.
